Spare parts for forklift trucks, reach stackers and cranes: definitions and differences

Genuine spare parts

This term refers to parts supplied directly by the manufacturer of the forklift truck, reach stacker or crane. These parts are often offered in the machine manufacturer’s packaging, even if they were produced by a third-party supplier.

Example: a hydraulic pump is supplied in Kalmar packaging for a Kalmar reach stacker, even though the pump was actually manufactured by Bosch.

Aftermarket parts

Aftermarket parts are spare parts that are equivalent to or compatible with the original part, but are not from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Example: Forks are supplied for a Clark forklift truck without it being clear who manufactured them. However, they should be suitable for Clark forklifts. The quality of these parts is often unclear.

OEM spare parts (original equipment manufacturer)

OEM parts come directly from the original component manufacturer and are identical to the genuine original part, except for the packaging, or are the direct replacement for the original spare part if it is no longer manufactured.

Example: A Parker hydraulic pump for a Still forklift delivered in Parker packaging, but is exactly the same quality and specification as the Parker pump installed in the Still forklift.

Original spare parts

In the European Union, the term ‘original’ is often used for parts that come either from the machine manufacturer itself or from the actual parts producer that supplies these parts to the machine manufacturer. This term can be misleading as it is often confused with genuine or OEM.

Example: A hydraulic pump can be considered original by both Kalmar and Bosch if both are identical.

Differences between genuine, OEM and original

Sometimes genuine, OEM and original spare parts are identical. This is the case when the actual parts producer is also the machine manufacturer’s supplier.

Example: a Bosch hydraulic pump for a forklift truck, supplied directly by Bosch or via the machine manufacturer, is identical.

In other cases, there are several OEM options. This can happen when an equipment manufacturer uses different parts depending on the market situation.

Example: a Kalmar reach stacker may include a Bosch pump as standard, but if there is a supply shortage, an equivalent Parker pump is used that has the same part number.

Rebuilt parts: opportunities and risks

There are many types of rebuilt parts, ranging from high to low quality. Although often less expensive, they can also pose a risk if they fail more frequently or raise safety concerns. Choosing these parts can therefore be both cost-effective and problematic.

Conclusion: quality and flexibility in spare parts

Types of spare parts FAQ

Genuine spare parts are original parts supplied directly by the machine manufacturer. They offer the highest level of authenticity and are often offered in the machine manufacturer's packaging, even if they were produced by a third-party supplier.
OEM parts come directly from the original parts manufacturer and are identical to the genuine parts in terms of quality and specifications, but are sold under the parts manufacturer's brand.
Aftermarket parts are replacement parts that are similar or compatible to the original part, but do not come from the original manufacturer. Their quality can vary and they are usually less expensive than genuine or OEM parts.
Genuine: parts supplied by the machine manufacturer, often in their packaging. OEM: parts directly from the original parts producer, identical to genuine parts. Original: often used synonymously with genuine or OEM in the EU, but refers to parts that come from the machine or parts manufacturer.
While they may be cost-effective, they can also increase the risk of breakdowns and safety issues, especially if their quality does not meet the standards.
The choice depends on your requirements: Genuine: Maximum authenticity and guaranteed manufacturer quality. OEM: Identical quality, often at a lower price.
