Our recent trip took us to the Port of Kaliningrad and the Baltiс Stevedoring Company. Together with our Italian partner, Fantuzzi Team Material Handling S.r.l., we took this opportunity to visit the impressive port facilities and explore the versatile handling capabilities on site.
The Port of Kaliningrad traces its origins to one of the oldest harbors on the Baltic Sea, the city of Königsberg – the capital of former East Prussia. Founded in 1339, Königsberg became part of the Hanseatic League, the legendary trade alliance of Baltic cities. After World War II, the Port of Kaliningrad was officially established in 1945 and is now one of the key transport enterprises in the westernmost and only ice-free Russian port on the Baltic Sea.
The modern port infrastructure includes terminals in Kaliningrad’s inner harbors, connected to the Baltic Sea by a navigable channel. With a length of 43 kilometers and a depth of up to 10.5 meters, the port offers optimal conditions for cargo handling. The port’s strategic location enables connections to the trans-European transport corridors, making it a vital hub for international trade.
The Baltiс Stevedoring Company operates container, general cargo, and Ro-Ro terminals in Baltijsk, Kaliningrad. With a terminal area of 25.8 hectares and a maximum storage capacity of 6340 TEU, the facility provides modern handling capabilities for various types of cargo. Its geographical location near the open part of the Baltic Sea is a significant advantage for container handling.
In 2017, the Baltiс Stevedoring Company recorded a 56% increase in container handling compared to the previous year, highlighting its efficiency and importance in the regional logistics network. The terminal’s technical facilities also allow for the handling of heavy and bulky goods, further enhancing the facility’s versatility.
